Same-Day Add-Ons: Fitting a New Trash Can Cleaning Into Today's Route
The phone rings at 9:30. A customer just saw your trailer two streets over and wants their cans cleaned today. Or a regular customer texts that they have a party this weekend and want an extra cleaning. Same-day add-ons are some of the easiest money in bin cleaning, if you can fit them in without blowing up the route.
Why Add-Ons Are Worth Saying Yes To
Missed Cans on a Bin Cleaning Route: Still Full or Already Put Away was about stops that drop off a route. Add-ons are the opposite: stops that join one. An add-on on a street the trailer is already working costs a few minutes and almost no drive. It is a better stop than most of the scheduled ones.
Add-ons also tend to become recurring customers. Someone who saw your trailer and wanted in that day is exactly the kind of neighbor who signs up for a monthly plan.
First Question: Is It Their Trash Day?
Before you say yes, ask when their trash was picked up. If it was today, the cans are empty and probably at the curb. Perfect. If their trash day is tomorrow, the cans are full and you cannot clean them today, no matter how close the trailer is.
That one question saves a wasted stop. If the trash day does not line up, offer the next route day that passes their street after pickup, and set them up properly so their trash day and cans are on the address from the start.
Find the Closest Trailer
Crew GPS from the techs' phones shows on the office map during the workday. Look at where each trailer is and where it is headed next. The right trailer for an add-on is usually not the closest one right now, but the one whose remaining route passes nearest the new address.
The Scheduled List for today, filtered by trailer, shows each rig's remaining stops in order. Pick the trailer, then pick where the new stop fits between two existing stops. Crew GPS on the Office Map: Knowing Where Every Bin Cleaning Trailer Is covers reading the map.
Get the Address Into the System
For an existing customer, add the extra cleaning to their address. For a new customer, create the client and address with the cans, trash day and can location notes. It takes a minute and it matters. The tech needs the can count and the location on the card, and you want the customer set up correctly if they become recurring.
If the request came through the website form or the customer app, it may already be waiting. Website requests and sign-ups land in Form Responses, and a sign-up converts into a client with one click. Customers already using the app can request service from it.
Slot the Stop Into the Route
Assign the job to the trailer for today and set its place in the route order on the board. Put it between the two stops it sits closest to. The tech's phone updates with the new card in the right spot, complete with the navigation button, the cans and the notes.
A quick call or text to the tech is still a good idea: "Added one on Maple, between stops 9 and 10." The new card will be there, but a heads-up keeps the tech from being surprised.
Once the stop is on the route, customers using the app see the updated count, and the new customer gets the automatic on-the-way text when the tech heads their way.
Know When to Say Tomorrow
Not every add-on fits. If the trailer is already behind, if the add-on is across town, or if the tech is low on water or time, the right answer is the next route day. Saying "we'll be on your street Tuesday after the trash truck" is still a fast answer. Put the job on the right day and the customer gets the night-before reminder automatically.
A simple rule helps the office decide quickly. For example: same-day add-ons only if a trailer's remaining route passes within a few minutes of the address and the trash was picked up today. Anything else goes to the next matching route day.
Get Paid the Same Day
When the tech completes the add-on, the invoice is created and a card on file can be charged. For a brand-new customer without a card on file, the invoice goes to them and they can pay online in the customer app. If they signed up through your sign-up form, the card was captured there.
Then follow up. A text the next day, something like "Thanks for having us out. Want us on your street every month?", turns an add-on into a plan.
The Short Version
Check that today was their trash day, find the trailer whose route passes nearest, set up the address properly, slot the stop into the route order and tell the tech. If it does not fit, offer the next route day. For the rest of the routing tools, head back to the TrashCanBossPro bin cleaning route software page.
